Fashion Designer Heidi Weisel passed away on January 28 at a relative’s home in Los Angeles. She was 59. The cause of death was not specified, a top fashion industry trade journal reported. Weisel, who was born in San Francisco and grew up in New York City, is survived by a brother Jack. Virtual services were held on January 31 at Mount Sinai Simi Valley.

Her parents were both Holocaust survivors.

She relocated to the US West Coast last spring because of the pandemic. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1984, she started her career by working as an assistant designer for Agatha Brown. She later worked for Occhio Coldo in Italy before starting her own signature line in 1990.

Her experience in Europe led to Weisel choosing fabrics from France, Italy and Germany in her designs. By 2002, she had expanded her eveningwear-centered firm to offer sportswear. While the eveningwear was made in the United States, the sportswear was produced in Scotland, Italy and Hong Kong.
