The Dutch retail sector experienced a year-on-year turnover growth of 4.7 per cent in October 2023, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Despite this increase, the volume of sales remained virtually unchanged from the previous year.

The non-food sector saw a positive trend with a 2.4 per cent rise in turnover. Additionally, the sector of online retail continued its upward trajectory, registering a 2.9 per cent increase in turnover compared to the same period last year.

It's important to note that the retail turnover data have been adjusted for the shopping-day pattern in October, as this can vary year by year. Without this adjustment, the retail turnover for October 2023 was 3.9 per cent higher than in the same month last year, as per CBS.

Specifically, in the non-food sector, there was a 2.4 per cent increase in turnover. However, when adjusted for price changes, the sales volume was slightly down by 0.6 per cent compared to October of the previous year. Retail segments such as shops selling footwear and leather products, and clothing stores, experienced notable year-on-year turnover growth.

The online retail sector's performance was particularly noteworthy. Web shops, whose core activity is selling goods over the internet, saw a turnover increase of 5.1 per cent. On the other hand, multi-channel retailers, who engage in online sales as a side activity, recorded virtually the same turnover in online sales as the previous year.

In terms of product categories, online turnover of other non-food products was higher in October 2023 compared to the previous year, while the turnover for clothing and fashion items showed a decline.
