Cargo traffic at major Indian ports up by 11.79% YoY in Feb 2023: IPA

Cargo traffic at India’s major ports rose by 11.79 per cent to 65.45 million tonnes in February this year from 58.55 million tonnes in the same month a year ago, according to the Indian Ports Association (IPA), which recently said that all major ports except those at Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar and Chennai witnessed positive growth in cargo traffic.

Deendayal Port registered the highest growth of 26.98 per cent during the month, followed by V O Chidambaranar Port with 26.04 per cent and Paradip Port with 23.63 per cent.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Kolkata and the Mumbai Port saw their cargo traffic rising by 18.21 per cent and 11.85 per cent year on year (YoY) respectively in the month, a news agency reported.

Chennai Port's cargo traffic fell by 12.65 per cent YoY, while Visakhapatnam Port saw a 5.62 per cent YoY drop, IPA said.

Cargo traffic at Kamarajar Port declined by 3.53 per cent. At Chennai Port the fall in cargo traffic was on account of a 33.33 per cent decline in other liquids as well as 19.18 per cent drop in container tonnage, it said.

India has 12 major ports. The cargo traffic across these ports in the April-February period of this fiscal stood at 712.35 million tonnes—up by 9.56 per cent from 650.20 million tonnes in the same period of the last fiscal, IPA added. Except Mormugao Port, positive growth was witnessed at all the major ports during the 11-month period compared to the same period of the previous fiscal.
