The European Union (EU) and India last week concluded in Brussels the fourth round of talks for a comprehensive free trade agreement. Both sides resumed negotiations on the proposed agreement on trade, investment and geographical indication on June 17 last year after a gap of over eight years.

“Round 4 of India EU-FTA negotiations held at Brussels,'' Nidhi Mani Tripathi, joint secretary in the department of commerce and India's chief negotiator for the agreement, tweeted.

Negotiations for the proposed trade pact started with the EU in 2007, but were stalled in 2013 as both sides failed to reach a consensus on key issues.

India's merchandise exports to EU were worth $65 billion in fiscal 2021-22, while imports were worth $51.4 billion.

The next round of the talks is scheduled for 12-16 June in New Delhi.
