The Living Wage Summit 2022, organised by IDH, The Sustainable Trade Initiative, highlighted collaborative action and accelerating solutions as key for making progress towards living wages. The event, held on December 7, 2022, in Brussels, Belgium, was attended by more than 300 participants.

At the many sessions at the summit, diverse stakeholder voices were also present. On a scale of engagement with living wages, the majority of the participants said that they were “promoting/advocating” living wages. The second highest vote showed that many were already “implementing living wages in their organisation or supply chain,” according to the IDH.

The Roadmap on Living Wages—a platform by IDH to secure living wages in supply chains—served as a guiding principle to frame the scope of the summit. This platform works to strengthen international alignment and build tangible solutions regarding living wage. Earning a living wage means workers receive sufficient wages to afford a decent standard of living for themselves and their family.

Companies keen on establishing living wages require reliable living wage benchmarks for every region they source from and an understanding of workers’ current earnings and how these compare to living wage benchmarks. There must be uniformity in how living wage gaps are verified as well as practical solutions for removing barriers and closing living wage gaps. Firms benefit from access to best practices and learning on how the gaps can be reduced over time, the IDH said.

Feedback from the participants highlighted that the Living Wage Summit 2022 was useful for networking and discovering information, tools, and opportunities for collaboration to help different stakeholders work on the subject.
