Insights

  • Polyester and viscose yarn prices in India are expected to stay positive due to slow imports and rising crude oil prices.
  • Viscose yarn prices rose slightly due to limited supply, while polyester yarn prices stabilised.
  • Upcoming elections may impact demand.
  • Markets in Surat, Mumbai and Ludhiana showed varying trends, with traders cautious due to elections.
Polyester and viscose yarn prices are expected to remain positive in India as slow imports after the implementation of the quality control order (QCO) and an increase in crude oil prices occur. Viscose yarn further inched up due to tight supply and a recent rise in the prices of the vegetable-based fibre. Viscose yarn gained ₹2-3 per kg in the domestic market. However, the prices of polyester yarn steadied after a recent rise. Polyester-cotton yarn prices also did not see significant gains. Traders said that tight supply would not allow prices of viscose and polyester yarn to decrease. But demand may remain average in the next two months because of the upcoming general elections in the country.

The Surat market also noted stability in polyester yarn prices after a surge last week. A trader from the Surat market told Fibre2Fashion, "The market did not see further movement in polyester yarn prices as buyers were discouraged after a rise in prices last week. Polyester fibre manufacturers had raised prices after a steep rise in crude oil in the global market. Limited imports caused by the implementation of QCOs also supported market sentiments."

In Surat, 30 count polyester spun yarn was traded at ₹140-143 (approximately $1.68-1.72) per kg (GST extra); 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹152-154 (approximately $1.83-1.85) per kg; 50/48 fully drawn yarn (FDY) at ₹115-117 (approximately $1.38-1.41) per kg; 75/72 FDY at ₹107-108 (approximately $1.29-1.30) per kg; 75 bright yarn at ₹107-108 (approximately $1.29-1.30) per kg; 30 viscose compact yarn (local) at ₹198-202 (approximately $2.38-2.43) per kg (GST extra), according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

In the Mumbai market, viscose yarn prices further gained ₹2-3 per kg. A trader from Mumbai said, “Market sentiments improved in the recent week. QCO restricted imports of viscose fibre, which has given room to local manufacturers to increase prices. The upcoming election may dampen market sentiments in the next two months, but demand will increase from July." Imported 30 count viscose vertex yarn was priced at ₹182-188 (approximately $2.19-2.26) per kg; and local 30 count ring-spun viscose yarn at ₹188-192 (approximately $2.26-2.31) per kg in this market, as per TexPro.

The Ludhiana market noticed an almost steady trend in polyester-cotton and polyester spun yarn prices. According to trade sources, winter season's garment production will begin soon, which should not support the demand for polyester and PC yarn. But traders will stay cautious about fresh buying before the election. The election may squeeze liquidity also, which may further restrict demand and stocking capacity.

In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹216-226 (approximately $2.60-2.72) per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹202-212 (approximately $2.43-2.55) per kg; 20 PC (100 per cent recycled PSF) at ₹103-109 (approximately $1.24-1.31) per kg; 30 count polyester spun at ₹155-161 (approximately $1.86-1.93) per kg (GST inclusive); and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹74-76 (approximately $0.89-0.91) per kg,

North India cotton prices further decreased by ₹25 per maund of 37.2 kg. Traders said that a weaker tone in ICE cotton led to slow buying from spinning mills and other buyers. They stated that buyers were very cautious about fresh purchases. They expected a further decline in cotton prices, so they did not show interest. Slow cotton arrival was not able to support market sentiments.

Today's arrivals were noted at 4,500 bales of 170 kg. State-wise arrivals were as follows: 400 bales in Punjab, 2,500 bales in Haryana, 1,500 bales in upper Rajasthan, and 600 bales in lower Rajasthan. Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹5,925 to ₹5,975 (approximately $71.21-71.81) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana and upper Rajasthan, prices ranged from ₹5,875 to ₹5,975 (approximately $70.61-71.81) per maund. Bikaner line cotton sold for ₹6,000 to ₹6,075 (approximately $72.11-73.01) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, cotton was priced at ₹57,000 to ₹59,000 (approximately $685.06-697.07) per candy of 356 kg.
