Pleasant weather was a strong factor behind a subdued year-on-year (YoY) power consumption growth of 1.4 per cent in India in March this year. The consumption during the month was 129.89 billion units (BU), government statistics show.

Power consumption stood at 128.12 BU in March last year, lower than 128.47 BU recorded in the same month a year earlier.

The highest supply in a day (peak power demand) rose to 221.70 GW in March 2024 compared to 208.92 GW in the same month last year and 199.43 GW in March 2022.

The Indian power ministry estimates a peak demand of around 260 GW this summer. Both demand and consumption of power will witness robust growth April onwards, Indian media reports cited experts as saying.

The power ministry had estimated the electricity demand to hit 229 GW last summer, but it did not reach the projected level in April-July due to unseasonal rainfall. Peak supply, however, touched a new high of 224.1 GW in June before dropping to 209.03 GW in July last year.

Power consumption grew in August, September and October last year, primarily due to humid weather conditions, and also a pick-up in industrial activities ahead of the festive season, the experts said.

A steady power consumption growth is expected due to improvement in economic activities and onset of summer in March.
