The consumer price index (CPI) in the Netherlands was 7.6 per cent higher in January this year than in the same month last year, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). In December, the inflation rate was 9.6 per cent. The energy price cap in particular caused inflation to fall. The price development of apparel also had a downward effect on inflation.

Apparel was 9.4 per cent more expensive than in January 2022. In December, the year-on-year increase for apparel was 12.3 per cent.

Inflation is measured each month as the increase in the consumer price index (CPI) relative to the same month in the previous year. The consumer price index shows the price development of a package of goods and services as purchased on average by Dutch households.

On January 1, 2023, a price cap on energy came into effect, and that caused inflation to fall. In January, energy was 3.4 per cent cheaper than one year previously. In December, energy was still 52 per cent more expensive.
