  • Viscose yarn remains stable but faces slow demand.
  • The Surat market saw FDY polyester yarn fall ₹2-3 per kg.
  • Mumbai's viscose yarn prices are steady post-wedding season.
  • Ludhiana observes varied trends in yarn prices.
Polyester-cotton and polyester yarn prices in Indian markets have fallen by ₹1-3 per kg due to tight payment flows and weak fabric purchases by the garment industry, which have dampened demand. Buyers are reportedly lacking confidence in fabric demand. While viscose yarn has remained steady, it too faces slow demand. Although there was improved buying last month driven by better payment flows and wedding season demand, sentiments have since weakened in April. Trade sources note a growing preference in the garment industry for high-quality, fashion-forward fabric imports from China at attractive prices, impacting local yarn market sentiments.

The Surat market has witnessed a drop of ₹2-3 per kg in fully drawn yarn (FDY) polyester yarn. However, polyester spun yarn has remained stable. A trader from the Surat market told Fibre2Fashion, "Payment flow has again slowed down as buyers are not in a hurry to clear outstanding payments in the first month of the current fiscal. The textile value chain did not expect very encouraging buying from retailers." Last month, the Indian market witnessed a good payment flow, as a new payment rule mandated buyers to clear their dues to micro and small enterprises within 45 days and within the same fiscal.

According to trade sources, in Surat, 30 count polyester spun yarn was traded at ₹144-145 (approximately $1.72-1.74) per kg (GST extra); 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹160-162 (approximately $1.92-1.94) per kg; 50/48 fully drawn yarn (FDY) at ₹117-118 (approximately $1.40-1.42) per kg; 75/72 FDY at ₹107-108 (approximately $1.28-1.30) per kg; 75 bright yarn at ₹107-108 (approximately $1.28-1.30) per kg; 30 viscose compact yarn (local) at ₹203-204 (approximately $2.42-2.44) per kg (GST extra).

In the Mumbai market, viscose yarn prices have steadied as demand has dried up after the wedding season. Viscose yarn is mainly used for ladies' dresses. The wedding season sees strong buying by women in the domestic market. A trader from Mumbai stated that not only is the wedding season over, but the higher interest of the garment industry in fabric imports has also discouraged buying of viscose yarn. The garment industry prefers Chinese fabric, as it can expect better fabric at cheaper rates. Imported 30 count viscose vertex yarn was priced at ₹182-188 (approximately $2.18-2.25) per kg; and local 30 count ring-spun viscose yarn at ₹190-196 (approximately $2.27-2.35) per kg in this market.

The Ludhiana market noticed a mixed trend in polyester-cotton and polyester spun yarn prices. 30 PC combed yarn decreased by ₹1-2 per kg due to cheaper cotton and slow demand. However, other varieties of PC yarn remained stable. Polyester spun yarn was also traded stable. Traders said that buying from the fabric industry was not as expected. The market was lacking confidence regarding retail demand.

In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹209-219 (approximately $2.51-2.63) per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹196-206 (approximately $2.35-2.47) per kg; 20 recycled polyester fibre yarn at ₹106-114 (approximately $1.27-1.36) per kg; 30 count polyester spun at ₹157-165 (approximately $1.88-1.98) per kg (GST inclusive); and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹74-77 (approximately $0.89-0.92) per kg, as per market sources.

North Indian cotton prices slipped ₹25-30 per maund of 37.2 kg due to slow demand from spinning mills and declining ICE cotton. Traders said that cotton arrivals had further decreased, which should support buying from spinning mills. However, mills were not interested in fresh buying.

Today's arrivals decreased to 2,000 bales of 170 kg in north India. State-wise arrivals were as follows: 100 bales in Punjab, 900 bales in Haryana, 600 bales in upper Rajasthan, and 400 bales in lower Rajasthan. Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹5,800 to ₹5,825 (approximately $69.61-69.91) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana, prices ranged from ₹5,725 to ₹5,825 (approximately $68.71-69.91). In upper Rajasthan, cotton was priced between ₹5,625 and ₹5,825 (approximately $67.51-69.91) per maund. Bikaner line cotton sold for ₹5,825 to ₹5,925 (approximately $69.91-71.11) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, cotton was priced at ₹55,500 to ₹57,600 (approximately $666.10-691.31) per candy of 356 kg.
