Description : This high quality 100% wool fabric is extremely popular. It can be used to make beautiful soft fine summer weight blankets for babies, for appliqué work, tea cosies, hot water bottle covers and other embroidered projects. A favourite nowadays for lightweight baby blankets, this fabric was traditionally used for workmen's and miners' shirts. Because of its absorbent qualities, Doctor's flannel has in the past been used for underwear ( as recommended by Dr Jaeger in the mid 1800s ) and until recent times was a practical fabric for baby clothing. Some garments, including women's petticoats, were made of red flannel. As wool was the only fibre which would take red cochineal dye, people could be confident they were purchasing genuine woollen fabric! The name derives from the company which originally made the fabric, but Doctor's flannel is now used as a generic name. The smooth surface and open weave of this fabric make it a favourite with embroiderers. It is so fine that it is ideal for the shadow work on the delicate crib blanket.

Washing Instructions : Warm hand wash or gentle machine wash on wool cycle. Use approved wool detergent. Do not bleach. Warm rinse well. Normal spin. Lay flat on a towel to dry in shade. Do not tumble dry. Warm iron.
