With a positive upturn after a harsh recession, whatwould be the retail scenario for the coming year 2010?

New Year is likely to give new hopes for everyone. The sameapplies to the retail sector as well. Retailers are buoyant about their revivalin the coming year, 2010. Plausible revival signs for retail are on the horizonin big cities like Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai. Estimates state that theshopping fever would soon spread to the other cities revitalizing the retailsector. Industry analyst forecast a drastic retail expansion during 2010 withmany Retail giants expanding their presence in II and III tier cities. In theII tier cities, economy has sufficiently improved to stimulate the shoppersinterest thereby boosting up the sales figures. Luxury segment holds muchpromise for the coming year.


Indian retail market is the fifth largest retaildestination; globally and owns the credit of being ranked as an attractivemarket for retail investment by AT Kearneys eighth annual Global RetailDevelopment Index (GRDI). Retail industry is the largest segment in India, employing about 8% of the workforce, and contributing more than 10% of the countrysGDP. During the past decade, retail industries have built up strong lifestylebrands positioning themselves to cater to the tastes and preferences of theirconsumers and utilizing the increasing income of the end users. With theeconomy recovering faster than anticipated, there is a drastic change in theconsumer spending patterns. The past three months have witnessed a growth inthe retail segment. This is not merely due to the festival season.


Retailers Plans for 2010:


Spencers Retail current owns around 220 stores with a 1million sq ft of retail space. They propose to open new standalone stores,customizing offerings to cater to the requirements of the shoppers in theirlocality. 80% of their commodities would be common all across India, while the remaining 20% would be modified matching with the tastes of the local public.


Provogue plans to open 50 retail stores in the coming twoyears with an average investment of Rs.4-5 million per shop. The overallinvestments are planned for Rs.200-250 million. Provogue is latest addition tothe list of retail giants who are planning to expand into Indian hinterland.

For Shoppers Shop 2009 was a vigilant year, while 2010 wouldbe a period of expansion. During the former year they opened two stores. In thefollowing year, they have chalked out plans for adding eight more stores alongwith the 30 stores running successfully thereby reaching an investment of 100crore. Their main focus would be on format stores.


 

Future Group has already added 2 million sq ft to its formats during 2008 & 2009. Currently it intends an increase from Rs.10, 000 crore and reach Rs.25, 000 crore entity with 30 million sq ft by 2014. Pantaloon is estimating a budget of Rs400 crore for its expansion activities. By the coming year, it proposes to add up to 2.4 million sq ft of retail space. They plan for opening 10-12 stores in the next year.


Shopping in India would witness a change with a simultaneous change in the buying behavior of the Indian shoppers. The whole format of shopping would also see a transformation. Multi store malls, large shopping centres, format stores, and new shopping complexes with provides shopping, entertainment, and food; all under one roof will change the destiny of the retail industry.


Economic analysts predict that by 2010 retail industry in India would grow up from the current 7.5 billion to h USD 21.5 billion. Revenues are expected to increase at a ratio of 5% year on year, with more business in the urban areas, increasing income levels, and a steep rise in the rural consumption. It is optimistically expected that by the year 2016, Indian retail industry would grow to reach USD 175-200 billion and prove itself as one of the fastest growing industry.
