Introduction


The term Technical Textiles is defined as woven, knitted,braided and nonwoven textiles manufactured specifically to meet technical orfunctional requirements such as protection from sunlight, heat, cold, fire,radiation, noise, vibration, water, pollutants, erosion and seepage and aidingin stiffness, compactness, Absorption, filtration and cleaning.


Examples of technical textiles are Tarpaulins, Canvases,Tents, Awnings, Filters, Automotive Carpets, Facial wipes, Synthetic Leather, Waddings, Interlinings, EmbroideryBacking fabrics


Technical Textiles are different from conventional textilesin the sense that they are not manufactured primarily for meeting aesthetic orcomfort properties though some technical textile products like diapers andsanitary napkins have to meet aesthetic and comfort properties also.


Technical Textiles can be woven, knitted, braided andnonwoven fabrics. Nonwoven fabrics, as the name implies are not woven fabricsbut produced from web or batt of fibres and strengthened by chemical bonding,needle punching, Spunlacing or thermal bonding. While Nonwovens also come underthe broad category of technical textiles, separate trade associations andstatistics are available due to its extensive end use applications in differentsegments such as medical, feminine care, baby care, wipes, filtration etc.
