Virtual garment simulation is the result
Besides the higher level
Virtual garment design and simulation involves a combinationof a large range of techniques, involving mechanical simulation, collisiondetection, and user interface techniques for creating garments. As a result ofthe advances in the developments of virtual garment simulation technologies, adetailed framework which fits the needs of the garment industry of virtualgarment design and prototyping, concentrating on interactive design, simulationand visualization features are become dire necessity. The framework integratesinnovative tools aimed towards efficiency and quality in the process of garmentdesign and prototyping, taking advantage of state-of-the-art algorithms fromthe field of mechanical simulation, animation and rendering. The challenges ofvirtual garment simulation are numerous, and have attracted research effortsfor more than a decade. While computer graphics gets the most obvious benefitsfrom garment simulation on animated virtual characters, virtual prototyping ofgarment models is another major application field for the garment industry.Virtual garment simulation is the result of a large combination of techniquesthat have also dramatically evolved during the last decade. Unlike themechanical models used for existing mechanical engineering for simulatingdeformable structures, a lot of new challenges arise from the highly versatilenature of cloth. Cloth simulation has however matured enough to introduce itspotentials to the garment industry. The main needs to be fulfilled are mostlyrelated to virtual garment prototyping, as well as visualization applicationsrelated to and virtual fashion and prototyping. Besides the higher level ofaccuracy needed to simulate the complex features of fashion models, new clothdesign systems are now intended to help the garment creator shorten the designprocess of a garment; using innovative techniques and tools described. Thecreation of a powerful interactive garment design system relates to coresimulation technologies as well as new dynamic manipulation techniques for thecloth mesh. More than bringing new efficient tools to the garment industry, these advances also open the door to new ways of thinking fashion design andgarment creation.
