A pajama is a Hindi word which signifies leg clothing. It originated from India during the 1880's where the first users were men. Instead of using nightshirts, men were using their pajamas when sleeping. Pajamas which can either be a one-piece (pants only) or two-piece (having a shirt and pants) are an outfit covering the legs while nightshirts are long shirts which are extended up to the knee. Now, pajama manufacturers also created a different version of pajamas for women.

Women pajamas are more of a fashion statement for women of the new era. North American young females are wearing pajama pants even in public to express their tastes in fashion. Typically, the word satin refers to a fabric made of filament fibers which include silk, polyester, or nylon formed using the satin weave technique. The satin weave is more appropriately used in making fine clothing and evening wears. This became the most favorite material in making pajamas.

Now, there are other materials used for manufacturing pajamas besides these three major fibers. It includes linen, lace, acrylic, cashmere, chiffon, denim, crepe, fleece, down, leather, jersey, rayon, and micro fiber.

The patterns and designs of pajamas have usually visual references which displays the tastes and preferences of the user. Different images such as polka dots, balloons, animals, and sports are imprinted on the chosen material for decoration purposes. But plainer designs are also available such as plain gray or plaid. Pajamas worn in public have are created with unique designs to bring a different appeal on the user.
