You might be tempted to believe that you need not invest too much thought into buying a watch, right? Honestly, find one that you can afford that looks great and you are done. Unfortunately, like any purchase, doing your homework is essential to getting the best deal and finding the watch that is perfect for your lifestyle and wardrobe. So before rushing headlong into a purchasing decision that you will regret later, here are some things to keep in mind when thinking about buying a watch.
You need to consider the functionality of the watch that you want to purchase. Sure, the watch can give you the time of day, but what other qualities do you want it to have? How much time precision do you want the watch to display? Minutes or milliseconds? Do you want it to become a family heirloom? Knowing your thoughts on these types of issues will help you to find the best watch that matches your needs.
When it comes down to it, price is usually a major factor in any purchase. Watches are no exception. Know your price range before you get to the jewlery store. It is better to have a range instead of a specific number so you can consider a wider range of watches.
Where are you planning on wearing this watch? What activities do you plan on undertaking with the timepiece on? Do you have a physically demanding job where durability is an issue? Basically, think about your lifestyle or that of the person you plan on giving it to when making a purchase decision.
Think about the service plan that your watch will require. Mechanical watches usually need to be serviced once every three years. Battery operated (quartz) watches are normally serviced when it is time to change the battery.
Interestingly there are several materials to choose from in a watch. Do you want plastic, gold-plated, stainless steel, or resin? The type of material you pick should reflect the components of your life activities. If you decide to go the gold-plating route then be aware that the price depends on the thickness of the gold-plate. This is measured in microns.
Different watches provide various responses to water. Do you want a watch that is fully water resistant? Or are you just concerned about minor water contact such as rain and small water marks? If so, then you need a water resistant rating of 3 ATM. If you are going to be in constant contact with water then find a water resistant rating of 5 ATM. This water resistance will do fine when you go swimming every now and then.
As you can see from these considerations, buying a watch requires research that needs to be made before you go to the jewlery store. In summary you need to figure out where and why you will wear the watch plus how much your budget will allow for the watch. This way you improve your chances of finding the watch that has always been at the top of your wish list.
