Consumers were notably more pessimistic about the economy in November. This component of the indicator dropped to -43, down from -37 in October. Perceptions of the current economic situation and expectations for the next 12 months both worsened, said CBS in a press statement.
The willingness to buy component of the confidence indicator stayed unchanged at -12 in November. While consumers' views on their financial situation over the past 12 months turned more negative, their outlook for the coming year also weakened. Attitudes towards making large purchases remained as negative as in October.
The consumer confidence indicator, which CBS has monitored monthly since April 1986, reached an all-time high of 36 in January 2000 and an all-time low of -59 in September and October 2022. The indicator balances positive and negative responses to five questions, with values ranging from -100 (entirely negative) to 100 (entirely positive).
