  • Nike has introduced a new apparel technology, Aerogami, in its Run Division Aerogami Jacket.
  • The tech provides on-demand ventilation through winged vents that open and close based on sweat levels.
  • Developed by the Nike Explore Team and the Nike Sport Research Lab, the jackets are tailored for gender-specific needs and protect against wind and rain.
American multinational sportswear firm Nike has unveiled a new apparel technology, Aerogami, designed for runners. The innovative venting system, developed by the Nike Explore Team (NXT) and the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL), autonomously adapts to runners' needs, providing breathable performance gear with on-demand ventilation. The technology will make its debut in the new Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket.

Aerogami works in real-time as athletes warm up, sweat, and cool down. The technology utilises tiny winged vents that open as sweat builds against the skin, allowing better airflow and facilitating sweat escape. Once the body cools down and sweat dries, the vents close back up. This unique capability is made possible by a moisture-reactive film applied to the vents, which contracts and expands upon sensing sweat against the body, Nike said in a press release.

The Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket features the venting system strategically across the chest and back—the areas where runners typically heat up and sweat most—to enable airflow as runners move.

In designing the jacket, the team took advantage of the NSRL’s environmental chambers and data visualisation from runners’ heat and sweat maps. Consequently, the vent placement varies between the women’s and men’s jacket to accommodate gender-specific needs. For instance, additional vents have been included on the women's jacket around the area where a sports bra sits.

Furthermore, the jacket is equipped with Nike’s pinnacle performance-apparel material, Storm-FIT ADV, to offer protection from wind and rain.

“Aerogami is our latest example of Nike’s culture of innovation focused on solving the timeless needs of runners,” said Jahan Behbahany, senior apparel innovation product manager in Nike’s Advanced Innovation Collective. “We know feeling too warm, uncomfortable and distracted while wearing a running jacket is a common challenge many runners face, so we’ve obsessed developing an innovative solution that gives them increased breathability without compromising style and protection. What’s great about this technology is not only can the athlete feel the benefit, but they can also see it.”

The women’s Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket is set to release in July 2023 on nike.com and at select retailers, with the men’s version slated for release later in the fall.
