India will soon unveil a new industrial policy that may include a dedicated chapter on design, according to Ramesh Abhishek, secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), which floated a policy draft in August 2017 to create jobs for the next 20 years, promote technology transfer and attract $100 billion foreign direct investment annually.

Highlighting the significance of design and innovation in India's economic progress at an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi, Abhishek promised his support for setting up a National Design Centre at the earliest.
Intellectual property rights are being better enforced through training of police officers and the judiciary, he said. (DS)
