Kenya is home to the third largest livestock herd in Africa.

The proposed policy is also expected to offer opportunities for industrial transformation and economic inclusion due to its promotion of strong linkages between the leather industry in Kenya and other economic activities in rural and pastoralist economies, economic activities in the arid and semi-rrid lands and in the contemporary industries that offer inputs required for leather value addition, the cabinet office said.

Earnings from livestock and products increased to Ksh 161.6 billion in 2021, according to official statistics.

The cabinet, meanwhile, approved the National Phytosanitary Policy to enhance access of Kenyan agricultural produce to more foreign markets, a Kenyan newspaper reported.

The policy is expected to reduce cases of Kenyan products being intercepted by various countries which, according to the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service, cost the country at least Ksh 2 billion annually.
