Apparel-footwear organisations recently came together to present a proposal for a Green Recovery Plan for Europe. The Policy Hub, a joint effort of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry and Global Fashion Agenda, unveiled a proposal outlining seven key principles needed for a green recovery for the industry.

The proposal was developed in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group, according to a press release from Copenhagen-based Global Fashion Agenda.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the global economy. The apparel, textile and footwear industry is no exception. This crisis coincides with sustainability programs and commitments have increasingly becoming the industry norm and steps towards achieving a circular economy and carbon neutrality are taken,” said Baptiste Carriere-Pradal, chair of the Policy Hub.

“Shifting the economy to a more circular one requires all hands on deck and is a collaborative effort by citizens, industry and policymakers who can build upon both existing commitments and new initiatives together,” he said.

The proposal highlights seven key principles that follow the European Commission’s recently issued recovery plan. The Policy Hub suggested the European Union (EU) authorities and member states consider these key principles and implement some measures in the next 12 months and the rest in the medium to long-term—within five years.
