Australia’s imports of textile yarn, fabrics, and made-up articles (classified under 65) also increased by 6.30 per cent to $776 million in the first two months of the current year, compared to $730 million in the same period last year. However, fibre imports (classified under 26) eased by 9.09 per cent to $20 million from $22 million in the period under review.
In August 2024, the imports of apparel and clothing accessories decreased by 2.84 per cent to $1,094 million, down from $1,126 million in August 2023. The inbound shipment in August 2024 was also lower than the $1,147 million recorded in July 2024. Imports of textile yarn, fabrics, made-up articles, and related products amounted to $379 million in August 2024, lower than the $397 million imported in July 2024 and $391 million in August 2023.
In the last fiscal 2023-24, Australia's apparel and clothing imports were recorded at $12.231 billion, 5.2 per cent lower than the $12.903 billion imported in fiscal 2022-23. Similarly, inbound shipments of textile yarn and fabrics decreased by 9.40 per cent, declining to $4.371 billion in 2023-24 from $4.825 billion in 2022-23.
Meanwhile, Australia's exports of textile fibres were valued at $1,506 million in July-August 2024, 6.74 per cent lower than the $1,615 million exported in the corresponding period of the previous year. However, imports increased by 3.44 per cent to $750 million in August 2024 from $725 million in August 2023. Imports were recorded at $756 million in July 2024.
The country exported textile fibres worth $7.053 billion in fiscal 2023-24, down 13.97 per cent from $8.199 billion in 2022-23. It is worth noting that Australia is one of the major cotton-producing and exporting countries.
