Apparel and textile exporters in Bangladesh last week urged the government to allow export-oriented factories to operate during strict restrictions from July 23 to August 5 to avoid an export tumble and bankruptcy of entrepreneurs. They wrote a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying if factories remain closed for 18-20 days, export orders for late summer, Christmas and winter would be lost.
Apparel and textile sector leaders met cabinet secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam to discuss the issue.
The Cabinet Division on July 13 issued a notification relaxing the restrictions on public movement and businesses from July 14 midnight to July 23 morning for celebration of Eid on July 21 and pre-Eid economic activities and imposing fresh restrictions from July 23 to August 5 to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Several trade bodies claimed workers would shift to rural areas if the factories remain closed for 18-20 days and return amid high risk of contracting COVID-19, according to media reports in the country. The country is now receiving huge export orders for garments.
