Bangladesh customs keen to quickly settle exim issues of RMG industry

The Bangladesh customs department is keen on a quick completion of export- and import-related activities of the apparel industry as that is a need that arose amid the ongoing crisis, Chattogram customs commissioner Faizur Rahman recently told members of the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

BGMEA first vice president Syed Nazrul Islam said export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) industry is struggling hard to survive, facing competition from neighbourhood peers despite adverse global situation.

BGMEA vice president Rakbul Alam Chowdhury said the sector has suffered an image crisis much more than that of economic losses, according to domestic media reports. Several foreign buyers have cancelled their orders.

BGMEA representatives met Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, new chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority. The latter sought BGMEA’s cooperation in the speedy implementation of various plans for infrastructural development at the port.
