The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently announced reaching the milestone of having 200 green factories certified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

Out of these, 73 are Platinum, 113 Gold, 10 Silver and four are certified factories.

LEED certification is globally recognised as a symbol of excellence in sustainable building practices.

Thirteen out of the global top 15 LEED green factories are located in Bangladesh, BGMEA president Faruque Hassan said.

Thirty garment factories in the country received LEED certification last year; 15 were Platinum and 15 Gold. Eighteen factories have been LEED certified so far this year—13 Platinum and 5 Gold.

"I hope by the end of this year we will be able to reach a new milestone in the number of factory certifications in a single year,” Hassan was quoted as saying by Bangladesh media outlets.

As many as 500 factories in the country are waiting for USGBC certification, he added.
