Efforts are underway in Cambodia to bolster trade ties with its neighbour, Thailand. Cambodia's key exports to Thailand encompass textiles, agricultural goods, gems, raw materials, and semi-finished products. Notably, Cambodia emerged as the fourth-largest supplier, accounting for 5 per cent of Thailand's total apparel imports valued at $1,071.121 million from January to September 2023.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Cambodian counterpart, Hun Manet have met in Bangkok on Wednesday to discuss enhancing bilateral trade, improving cross-border goods transportation, and removing trade barriers, as per media reports.

Thailand imported apparel worth $1,071.121 million in the initial three quarters of 2023, with imports from Cambodia amounting to $54.309 million, constituting 5.07 per cent of the total. Cambodia ranked as the fourth-largest apparel supplier to Thailand, trailing behind China, Italy, and Vietnam. Impressively, Thailand's apparel imports from Cambodia surged by 36.7 per cent from $39.729 million in the same period of 2022, according to Fibre2Fashion's market analysis tool TexPro.

In 2022, Thailand's total apparel imports reached $1,306.983 million, with Cambodia's inbound shipment valued at $57.604 million, representing 4.41 per cent of the total. Despite being the fourth-largest apparel supplier to Thailand, Cambodia's share remains modest.

However, Cambodia's exports of home textiles to Thailand were marginal, amounting to $8.084 million in January-September 2023, compared to Thailand's total home textile imports of $367.715 million during the same period. Cambodia ranked ninth with a 2.01 per cent share of the home textile supply to Thailand, as per TexPro.

Although Cambodia is a significant global apparel exporter, its trade volume with Thailand remains limited. While Thailand imports apparel and textiles for domestic consumption, Cambodia's market share remains minimal as Thailand primarily favours textile products from China. Cambodia is actively striving to expand its presence in the Thai market. Despite Thailand's greater trading interests lying in other products, both countries stand to benefit from strengthened trade relations, presenting a mutually advantageous scenario.
