China's share 27% in US' imports of leather apparel in Jan-Sept 2022

US imported leather apparel and accessories worth $2.695 billion from China, which was 27.10 per cent of its total imports of $9.944 billion during January-September 2022. The imports registered an impressive growth of 29.46 per cent year on year (YoY). There was no spill over effect of US ban on cotton from Xinjiang region on leather products. 

China was the top supplier of leather products to the US with 27.10 per cent share during the period under review. The other top five suppliers were Italy at $1.582 billion (15.91 per cent), Cambodia at $1.272 billion (12.80 per cent), France at $804.814 million (8.09 per cent), Indonesia at $614.173 million (6.18 per cent), and India at $610.116 million (6.14 per cent), as per data obtained from Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro. 

The imports from China have been surging since 2020 when it touched the bottom. The shipment was recorded at $2.081 billion in January-September 2021, which was 12.24 per cent higher than the inbound shipment of $1.854 billion in the corresponding period of the preceding year, when it had come crashing down by 45.35 per cent YoY. 

The inbound shipment was recorded at $4.831 billion in the January-September 2017, and it then witnessed a downward trend to slip by 2.93 per cent YoY to $4.690 billion in January-September 2018. It further reduced to $3.393 billion in the corresponding period of 2019, as per TexPro.
