The European Union (EU) and Germany recently transferred €80 million to the Bangladesh government to strengthen key areas of its social security system and build resilience to COVID-19, with a particular focus on affected workers in export-oriented industries. This is the first joint disbursement from the €113-million EU-Germany grant as part of Team Europe’s response to fight COVID-19 and its consequences in Bangladesh.

The establishment in October of the government’s Social Protection Programme for Unemployed and Distressed Workers in the readymade garment (RMG), leather goods and footwear industries features as an important response measure, the EU said in a press release.

Funds are channelled through the budget support programme on National Social Security Strategy reforms in Bangladesh.

On 22 December, eligible workers under the programme managed by the department of labour received a first monthly cash transfer of BDT 3,000.
