During a recent event, experts highlighted the declining cost of rooftop solar units, stating industries can benefit significantly from the same.

Shafiqul Alam, lead analyst of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) revealed rooftop solar facilities can reduce electricity costs per unit significantly and claimed projected savings of $476 to $1 billion annually in Bangladesh with 2000 MW of rooftop solar capacity.

The event organised by the Energy and Power magazine and IEEFA South Asia, featured discussions by industry leaders including director general of power cell Mohammad Hossain, former dean of BUET, Dr. Ijaz Hossain, executive director and CEO of Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) Alamgir Morshed, president of Bangladesh Solar and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA) and director of Energypac Power Generation Ltd., Md. Nurul Aktar.

Shafiqul Alam highlighted the role of solar power in reducing load shedding but noted public scepticism and lack of financial institution support as the barriers.

Mohammad Hossain mentioned the popularity of rooftop solar since net metering introduction, citing the 40 MW installation in Korean EPZ while Dr. Ijaz Hossain expressed frustration over grid-related reluctance towards renewable energy, fearing grid management challenges.

Meanwhile, Alamgir Morshed, from IDCOL, said the organisation’s financing of 50 MW rooftop solar projects, with plans to finance 300 MW by 2025.
