Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently urged textile industry stakeholders to explore new garment markets and develop newer products to keep pace with trends. "They, who are working with garments and their exports, will have to find new markets. Newer products will have to be produced keeping in mind that the choices vary with different countries," she said.

She was virtually addressing an event inaugurating six textile educational institutes each in six districts.

"Fashion and design are very important and they are changing constantly. We have to keep pace with the ever-changing trend of garments and realise which design is high in demand," she was quoted as saying by Bangladeshi media reports.

The new textile institutes are Sheikh Rehana Textile Engineering College in Gopalganj, Sheikh Russel Textile Institute in Jamalpur, Shahid Abdur Rob Serniabat Textile Institute in Gouronodi, Barishal, Shahid Kamaruzzaman Textile Institute in Naogaon, Begum Amina Mansur Textile Engineering Institute in Sirajganj and Bhola Textile Institute.

A top priority of the government is to prepare skilled manpower for the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), for which several textile institutes and a textile university have been built, she said.

She also lamented that jute is not getting the kind of attention that the garment industry is receiving.
