Sales of womenswear dipped 17.8 per cent to 60,541 million yen during February 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year, while menswear was down 9.8 per cent to 20,312 million yen, and kidswear decreased 15.5 per cent to 7,726 million yen. Sales of other garments also declined 15.5 per cent to 6,526 million yen, according to the Japan Department Stores Association.
Footwear, bags and other articles' sales fell 16.7 per cent year-on-year to 45,097 million yen, whereas sales of sundries dropped 18.9 per cent to 69,901 million yen, the association said.
The fall in demand was due to about 10 per cent decrease in shoppers as a result of coronavirus scare, and stagnant sales of winter articles owing to warm winter weather.
Total same-store sales at the 206 stores cumulatively dropped 12.2 per cent year-on-year in February to 366,127 million yen, thus registering a decrease for the fifth consecutive month.
