Japan-Bangladesh talks for signing a free trade agreement (FTA) or an economic partnership agreement (EPA) should start as soon as possible, according to Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh ITO Naoki, who recently said firms on both sides want an FTA or EPA so that Bangladesh continues to enjoy duty benefits after graduating to a developing country in 2026. As it may take three to four years to conclude the signing of an FTA or EPA, so negotiations should start at the earliest possible, the envoy told a programme to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Japan-Bangladesh diplomatic ties in Dhaka.
The Japanese Commerce and Industry Association in Dhaka and Japan Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry jointly organised the event, Bangla media reported.
