A Leather Development Forum (LDF) is expected to be launched today in Bangladesh by The Asia Foundation to develop the country's tannery sector. The aim is to ensure that all interventions in the leather sector are as effective and sustainable as possible; create a synergy; maintain better coordination and collaboration; and avoid duplication among various organisations.

The Asia Foundation has consulted Germany development agency GIZ to set up the platform, according to Bangla media reports.

In 2018, the foundation started implementing a project to promote decent work and acceptable working conditions in the tannery industry.

The project is focusing on tannery management, supervisors and workers about tannery in-house waste management, occupational health and safety, chemical management, pre-treatment facility and recycling solid waste.

Under the Promoting Decent Work and Acceptable Working Conditions in the Tannery Sector in Bangladesh project, the foundation reached out to organisations working in the leather sector to be a part of the LDF, and most agreed.
