Australia imported trousers & shorts valued at $16.090 million. Innerwear from African nations followed closely as the second most dominant product, comprising 15.85 per cent of Australia's total apparel imports from Africa. Additionally, shirts accounted for 11.39 per cent, T-shirts 7.39 per cent, and jerseys 7.80 per cent of the total imports, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.
Although African nations have a limited share in global garment exports, the share of different products in garment trade shows how the continent is growing in the sector. Industry experts are keenly observing the progress of African countries in global garment trade. Price competitiveness in the global market is providing a conducive environment for least developed nations, most of which are situated in the African continent.
Australia's garment imports from Africa were less than one per cent of its total imports, which amounted to $7.036 billion during January-November 2023. The import was noted at $53.910 million in 2020, which was more than 40 per cent higher than the inbound shipments of 2020 when it was noted at $34.481 million. The import was around 18 per cent higher than the shipments of 2017, according to TexPro.
