The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) recently recognised three more readymade garment factories in Bangladesh as green, taking the total number of such apparel units in the country to 176. C.A Knitwear Limited, Silken Sewing Ltd. and Sultana Sweaters Ltd have received platinum ratings, according to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) director Mohiuddin Rubel.

Bangladesh has the highest number of green garment units, where 57 are platinum rated, 105 gold rated, 10 silver, and four have no rating.

Dozens more units are in the process of achieving USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, a newspaper in Bangladesh reported. The country has been receiving the certificates since 2001.

The certifications would boost the country’s branding amid post-COVID recovery and global economic recession and increase buyers' confidence towards us, he said.

The council honours factories based on several criteria, including transformation performance, energy, water and waste management.
