BGMEA president seeks Primark's help in Bangladesh wage compliance

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently called upon Primark to enhance its sourcing of garment items from Bangladesh, particularly focusing on high-end apparels.

This is as per media reports, which added, in addition to increased sourcing, Faruque Hassan also sought Primark’s assistance in implementing the recently announced minimum wage for garment workers even as he proposed adjusting the prices of Primark’s orders to accommodate this wage increase, underscoring the importance of fair compensation for workers in the industry.

The BGMEA president emphasised these during a meeting with senior Primark executives held at the BGMEA office in capital Dhaka.

The meeting was attended by prominent Primark officials, including Steve Lawton, the trading director; Matthew Rhodes, the head of sourcing and supplier management; Eoin Tonge, the chief financial officer; Richard Morrison, director; and Filippo Poggi, the sourcing country controller for Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Overall, the meeting served as a platform for constructive dialogue between BGMEA and Primark, with the shared goal of advancing the interests of Bangladesh’s garment sector while ensuring fair and sustainable practices throughout the supply chain.
