Pentland Brands last year introduced a new service to encourage its people to speak up about any issues of concern within its business, including those related to ethical trade, according to a report. Pentland has standards for working ethically and transparently, which it shares with all its suppliers, retailers and partners, the UK-based business said.

“Pentland Brands recognises that COVID-19 has posed unprecedented challenges to those already at risk of modern slavery. To mitigate this in its own supply chain, the company is committed to paying for goods produced for Pentland Brands throughout the pandemic,” the company outlined in its Modern Slavery report.

In some cases, the company’s suppliers switched to producing personal protective equipment for frontline workers. Speedo waived its exclusivity conditions for its goggle supplier in China, so it could manufacture PPE visors and protective goggles, said the report which outlines the company’s actions during 2020 to protect the people working in its supply chain.

In addition, in May 2021, Pentland Brands donated 750 food parcels to people working at one of its suppliers in India, to support those with limited access to essentials during the crisis.

“The company works hard to protect rights and improve working conditions for everyone in their supply chain. Pentland Brands’ new service allows any of its employee internationally to raise an issue either by phone or online. The company continues to share advice and learnings from their ongoing work with homeworkers worldwide. Pentland Brand also supported the development of a homeworking toolkit, which provides practical guidance and examples of good practice for protecting homeworkers in global supply chains,” the report further mentioned.

In 2020, Pentland published key documents including its corporate responsibility charter and responsible exit policy. It is also currently updating existing policies supporting vulnerable workers, which it will publish this year. The report shared data for Pentland Brands tier 1 and nominated 2 suppliers on gender balance and will look to further increase our transparency in 2021.
