The Panjab University in Pakistan has signed an agreement to provide new disease-resistant genetically-modified Bt cotton seed varieties developed by its researchers to farmers across the country through seven seed-marketing companies. The agreements will generate additional revenue for the university which will be used for such research.

The companies are Aurigo Group, SunCrop Group and Weal AG Corporation in Multan; Bahar Seed Corporation in Sadiqabad; ICI Pakistan Ltd in Lahore; and Neelum Seeds in Jahanian.

Farmers can save Pk Rs 20,000 per acre and when used over 8 million acres across the country, the transgenic cotton varieties would save Rs 144 billion, Pakistani media reports quoted university vice chancellor Zafar Moeen Nasir as saying.

Tayyab Husnain, Idrees Nasir, Ahmed Ali Shahid, Kausar Malik, Bushra Rashid and Abdul Qayyum from the university have significantly contributed to the development of these cotton varieties. (DS)
