Cotton Australia submits concerns on Water Amendment Bill 2023

The Senate initially referred the bill to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee on September 7, 2023. The tight three-week window allowed for stakeholders to make their submissions has been a point of contention, Cotton Australia said in a press release.

Murray praised the government's decision to extend the timeframes on Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism projects, commonly known as 605GL ‘Downwater’. However, he expressed disappointment that the government announced the resumption of water buybacks before considering alternatives, including those proposed by Cotton Australia.

To pass the Senate, the bill will need support from the Coalition, which is currently unlikely, and the Greens, who have stated their opposition. Support from at least two Independents will also be required.

The Senate committee's report is due by November 8, 2023.
