  • Pakistan experiences a dramatic increase in cotton arrival for the marketing year 2023-24, with a rise of 97.51 per cent compared to the previous year, totalling 30.41 lakh bales as of August 2023.
  • This spike is attributed to early sowing and favourable weather conditions which advanced the cotton influx to July, a month earlier than the usual August.
In the current marketing year of 2023-24, which spans from August to July, Pakistan has seen a significant rise in cotton arrival, registering an increase of 97.51 per cent. As of August 2023, the cotton arrival stood at 30.41 lakh bales each weighing 170 kg, a substantial increase from the 15.39 lakh bales recorded during the corresponding period last year.

Usually, the regular influx of cotton begins in August annually. However, this timeline was advanced to July this year due to early sowing and favourable weather conditions, which had a positive impact on the cotton crop. This situation contrasts starkly with the previous year when heavy rains and floods primarily affected the crop in the main cotton-producing states.

Data released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) on August 31, 2023, disclosed that the cotton arrival from July to August 2023 was 30,41,104 bales. This marks an increase of 15,01,394 bales compared to the 15,39,710 bales recorded in August 2022. Due to the early onset of cotton arrival this year, the PCGA released its second monthly report unusually in September. Last year, the first monthly report, which only covered the arrival data for July 2022, was also released in September.

The report further noted that the monthly arrival for August 2023 was 16.13 lakh bales, slightly higher than the 15.39 lakh bales documented during the same period last year. The total arrival nearly doubled, reaching 30.41 lakh bales, primarily due to the early arrival this year.

A provincial breakdown of the data revealed that Sindh province recorded a cotton arrival of 19,72,308 bales in July-August 2023, a remarkable 136 per cent increase compared to the 8,35,717 bales in August 2022. In August, Sindh contributed 10.40 lakh bales, comprising 55.43 per cent of the total cotton arrived, a figure reflecting an improvement from the 18.76 lakh bales observed in the previous season.

Meanwhile, Punjab witnessed a 51.82 per cent spike in cotton arrival with 10,68,795 bales arriving in the current season, a significant rise compared to the 703,993 bales during the same period last season.
