In a novel move, Amazon will integrate these drone deliveries into its existing delivery network. Drones will deploy from some of Amazon's same-day delivery sites. Additionally, in Italy and the UK, the drones will begin to integrate into some of the company's fulfilment centres. Starting with one site in each of the new locations, Amazon aims to offer customers faster delivery of a broader range of items, the company said in a press release.
Amazon is in active collaboration with national and international regulators, including those in the EU, Italy, the UK, and the US, to ensure the service is both safe and scalable. The company states that it has committed the necessary time and resources to refine the technology and build the proper infrastructure. Amazon further emphasised that it has taken great care to ensure the drones meet the highest safety standards in the commercial drone delivery industry.
Once the service becomes available, eligible Amazon customers will have the option to opt into drone delivery and choose from thousands of items that weigh five pounds or less.
Amazon expects drone delivery to be operational in all three new locations by the end of 2024. The specific cities involved, both in the US and abroad, will be named in the coming months.
