Benetton, best known for his unconventional advertising campaigns, was recognised “for his contribution to innovation in industry, his bold ideas and his lifelong quest for unity, civility and respect among all people,” FIT said in a statement.
Designer, inventor and engineer Chuck Hoberman and celebrity stylist and television personality Lilliana Vazquez were the keynote speakers at the event.
Accepting the degree, Luciano Benetton said: “I am particularly honoured and excited to receive this degree from such a prestigious institution in a city that continues to be the beating heart and extraordinary showcase of art and culture. I have always admired the American melting pot, which certainly inspired us in our mission to colour the world. I dedicate this recognition to my country, Italy, and above all to young people whom I always invite to dream with courage and optimism for a better civilisation.”
“Creativity and innovation are central to FIT’s curriculum and community, and a commitment to diversity is one of our core principles, so Luciano Benetton is a stellar example to our students. He is inspiring in both his career success, with his global outlook and fresh approach to business practice, and his personal values, including a deep humanity and willingness to take on difficult issues,” said FIT president Dr. Joyce F Brown.
