The Ludhiana Spinners Association (LSA) and the Northern India Textile Mills Association (NITMA) recently called on the government to stop anti-dumping duty (ADD) on imported acrylic fibre, the raw material for Ludhianas knitwear industry, the way ADD was abolished recently on purified terephthalic acid (PTA), boosting the synthetic fibre industry.
If ADD continues on acrylic fibre, also known as common man’s wool, during this pandemic, it will severely affect the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Ludhiana, the associations said in a statement. The Ludhiana Spinners Association (LSA) and the Northern India Textile Mills Association (NITMA) recently called on the government to stop anti-dumping duty (ADD) on imported acrylic fibre, the raw material for Ludhianas knitwear industry, the way ADD was abolished recently on purified terephthalic acid (PTA), boosting the synthetic fibre industry.#
Workers working in the acrylic fibre industry in Ludhiana are keenly watching the outcome of the ongoing ADD review based on a petition filed by a few producers.
The associations alleged that three big producers of the acrylic fibre industry are putting 10 lakh jobs and 7,500 MSMEs at stake.
Acrylic fibre is produced by three players in India out of which two are spinners as well and consume their own fibre. These three players have moved the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) to impose ADD on acrylic fibre as they wish to control the market, the associations alleged.
According to LSA chairman MM Vyas, these three fibre producers employ about 6,000, whereas LSA member units employ 45,000-50,000 apart from the nearly 10 lakh employed by the knitwear industry.
Without naming the companies, Vyas accused the three acrylic fibre producers of trying dictate terms and avoid competition.
NITMA’s Ravindra Verma said ensuring raw material availability at competitive prices is important for enhancing competitiveness of the labour-intensive textiles industry, especially for the acrylic fibre segment.
