Desk Report (RMG Times) Ensuring proper design and management of Effluent Treatment Plan (ETP) is not just critical to curbing pollution, but it is actually a legal requirement. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supporting the Department of Environment (DOE) in organizing capacity development training through the Sustainability in the Textile and Leather Sector (STILE) project commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The training workshop on Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) Design Evaluation, and Inspection process was conducted at a city hotel from 19 to 25 March 2022 by Dr. K.V. Emmanuel, an eminent ETP expert from India, as the lead instructor of the training course. He was supported by Dr. Mohammad Abbas Uddin Shiyak, Assistant Professor, BUTEX. Ten DOE officials  took part in the training.

Industrial units are legally mandated to install a properly designed Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) on the premises of the industry to treat the effluent before it is discharged. Furthermore, the standards of disposable effluent from the factory set by national laws must be monitored to ensure that the factory is complying with national standards. It is also necessary to monitor these parameters in the wastewater entering the ETP and at several stages in the ETP process.

Mr Faisal Rabbi from GIZ Bangladesh in his welcome speech mentioned that GIZ had taken a number of initiatives and training on ETP for DOE professionals was one of them. Apart from 5-day theoretical training the participating DOE officials will also visit factory site on the 4th day for hands-on training.

Mr Masud Iqbal Md.Shameem, Director, DOE and Gundolf Klaehn, Head of Environment GIZ Textile Asia, distributed certificates among the participants on successful completion of the training.
