  • UK saw no growth in production output for September 2023, marking a period of stagnation after a minor decline in August.
  • The country's manufacturing output saw a negligible increase of 0.1 per cent, with a mixed performance across sub-sectors.
  • The third quarter of 2023 also mirrored this trend, displaying no growth compared to the second quarter.
UK’s production output has stalled in September 2023, with no growth observed, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This stagnation follows a revised upward figure of a 0.5 per cent decrease in August 2023.

In the month of September, two of the four production sectors reported a rise in output, but the overall contribution remained minimal with manufacturing only seeing a slight increase of 0.1 per cent. Despite this, the manufacturing sector did see some positive movements, with a 0.1 per cent increase in output. This growth was uneven, however, with five of the thirteen sub-sectors experiencing uplifts.

The quarterly perspective offers a similar view of stagnation. The third quarter of 2023 (July to September) showed no growth in production output when matched against the second quarter of the same year (April to June), which itself had enjoyed a growth of 1.2 per cent. Despite the overall flat growth, the manufacturing sector was highlighted as the main positive contributor in the third quarter of 2023, as per ONS.
