  • The decline is notable even though Malaysia increased its total apparel imports this year.
  • Bangladesh had a minuscule share in Malaysia's home textile market.
Bangladesh is the third largest apparel supplier for Malaysia in the current year. In the span from January to April 2023, Malaysia imported apparel valued at a total of $609.646 million. Of this sum, goods worth $59.083 million were sourced from Bangladesh, constituting 9.69 per cent of the overall imports. Despite an increase in Malaysia's total imports during this period, the trade volume with Bangladesh experienced a decline, resulting in a diminished market share for the latter.

The country imported apparel totalling $598.073 million in the period from January to April 2022. Of this amount, imports from Bangladesh were valued at $72.909 million, according to data from Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro. Analysis based on this trade data revealed that Bangladesh successfully claimed a 12.19 per cent market share. While Malaysia's total apparel imports increased in the January-April 2023 period compared to the previous year, its imports from Bangladesh decreased, leading to a lower share in the market this year so far.

During the entire year of 2022, Malaysia imported apparel valued at $2,051.032 million. Its imports from Bangladesh stood at $234.673 million, accounting for 11.44 per cent of the total. Bangladesh maintained its position as the third-largest supplier of apparel to Malaysia during this period.

From January to April 2023, Malaysia imported home textiles valued at $157.855 million. However, Bangladesh had an insignificant presence in the market, with imports from the country valued at just $1.149 million, representing a 0.73 per cent share of the total. Bangladesh did not feature in the top 10 suppliers for home textiles, according to TexPro.
