Egypt's RMG exports rise by 36% y-o-y in Jan-April

The Readymade Garments Export Council of Egypt (RMGEC) has been working to raise exports during the COVID-19 pandemic by reducing prices and bearing part of the losses, according to its chairperson Mary Lewis, who recently announced that the sector’s exports rose by 36 per cent from January to April this year to $588 million compared to $433 million during the same period last year.

An RMGEC report, which monitored exports for the first four months of 2021, found Egyptian exports to the United States increased by 35 per cent, while those to Europe increased by 5 per cent.

Garment exports to Arab countries recorded an increase of 297 per cent between January and April 2021 compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, exports to African countries increased by 56 per cent, and exports to the rest of the world achieved a 13 per cent per cent increase.

Lewis said the council wants to introduce new exporters and small designers to the export market as one way to further promote exports.

In a statement, she said the primary goal is to maintain the reputation of Egyptian readymade garments in export markets and confirm the ability of factories to overcome the crisis. This would in turn prove the sector’s sustainability, and maintain the volume of sales.

Several virtual meetings were organised between Egyptian exporters and buyers from countries like Jordan and Saudi Arabia to discuss business opportunities.

A number of initiatives were launched to support RMG factories and help them with digital transformation, according to Egyptian media reports.

Lewis demanded that 30 per cent of the value of infrastructure for shipments from July 2019 until June 2020 be disbursed in cash to compensate for losses.
