Insights

  • The average price of Chinese apparel exports declined in Jan-Feb, continuing a trend seen in previous years.
  • Large garments, smaller pairs and weighted apparel saw reductions in price, influenced by stagnant global demand.
  • Historical data shows fluctuations based on market conditions, with prices recovering post-COVID but falling again due to low demand.
The decline in the average per unit price of Chinese apparel exports continued during the first two months of 2024, indicating that global export demand for apparel did not improve this year. All segments of apparel exports from China showed a downward trend. The average price of large garments reduced to $3.46 per unit in January-February 2024. Smaller apparel sold in pairs was exported at an average price of $0.35 per pair, and other types of apparel sold by weight were exported at $14.44 per kg during the same period.

According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, China exported large garments at $3.95 per unit in 2023. The average price fell by 12.40 per cent during the first two months of this year. Apparel sold in pairs was exported at $0.41 per pair, and apparel sold by weight was exported at $15.52 per kg in 2023. Both categories of exported garments showed a decline in average price during the period.

The average price fluctuated according to export demand in the global market. Before COVID-19, the average price of large garments exported from China was $3.57 per unit in 2019. It dropped to $3.45 per unit in 2020 due to disruptions. However, it recovered to $3.84 per unit in 2021 and rose to $4.24 per unit in 2022. Since then, the average prices have shown a downward trend due to poor demand.

Smaller garments were exported from China at an average price of $0.41 per pair in 2019, which decreased to $0.40 per pair in 2020. It then rebounded to $0.42 per pair in 2021 and $0.44 per pair in 2022. Similarly, garments sold by weight were exported at an average price of $14.98 per kg in 2019. The price maintained at $14.98 per kg in 2020, increased to $16.03 per kg in 2021, and further rose to $17.06 per kg in 2022, as per TexPro.

The trend of average prices shows the relationship between exporters and importers. Exporters face pressure to secure orders by offering lower prices to their buyers in cases of slow demand. On the other hand, they can command higher prices when supplying garments to their buyers under better market conditions.
