  • India's jute production is expected to fall over 20 per cent in 2023-24, missing the 100 lakh bale mark for the seventh consecutive year.
  • The estimated output of 87.98 lakh bales contrasts with the 110.83 lakh bales in 2013-14.
  • Last two years have seen outputs of around 89-90 lakh bales, indicating a consistent shortfall in meeting production targets.
India could not increase jute production in the last decade. In fact, its production is likely to decline by more than 20 per cent in the current season 2023-24, compared to 110.83 lakh bales in 2013-14. India’s Ministry of Agriculture has estimated production of 87.98 lakh bales of 180 kg against its own target of 100 lakh bales for the current season.

According to the first advance estimates for 2023-24, if jute production reaches the estimated figure of 87.98 lakh bales, it will be 20.90 per cent lower than the production noted a decade ago.

India’s jute production declined to 106.18 lakh bales in 2014-15 and further to 99.40 lakh bales in 2015-16 from the output of 110.83 lakh bales of 2013-14, as per historical production data. The production recovered to 104.32 lakh bales in 2016-17, but thereafter it has not touched a mark of 100 lakh bales.

According to official production data of the Ministry, jute output was noted at 95.91 lakh bales in 2017-18, 94.97 lakh bales in 2018-19, 94.46 lakh bales in 2019-20, 89.53 lakh bales in 2020-21, 97.62 lakh bales in 2021-22 and 89.89 lakh bales in 2022-23.
