Sinopec Sabic Tinjin Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (SSTPC), the Chinese petrochemical joint venture (JV) between China’s Sinopec and Saudi Arabia’s SABIC, recently kicked off an expansion project at its Tiajin ethylene plant. The construction work will take 18 months to complete, with the new capacity scheduled to start operations in April 2021, according to SSTPC.

The project will increase the current 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) ethylene production capacity to 1.3 Mtpa, according to a top market intelligence news website.

After the $201 million investment, the ethylene plant will reportedly rank ahead of similar sized plants in China, enhancing SSTPC’s competitiveness, the 50-50 JV said.

Expansion work includes construction of a new cracking furnace as well as a trio of 2,000-cubic-meter ethylene tanks and one 1,500-cubic-meter cryogenic tank.
