China’s online retail sales rose 4 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in 2022 to touch 13.8 trillion yuan (around $2 trillion), as per the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). However, retail sales of consumer goods in the East Asian country fell by 0.2 per cent YoY—43.97 trillion yuan ($6.51 trillion)—last year.The nation’s retail sales of consumer goods in rural and urban regions totalled to 5.93 trillion yuan and 38.04 trillion yuan, respectively. Moreover, tangible merchandise retail sales increased by 6.2 per cent YoY to 11.96 trillion yuan—making up 27.2 per cent of the total retail sales of consumer goods, according to several local media reports.
While the total retail sales of consumer goods in China dropped 1.8 per cent YoY and 4.1 per cent month-on-month (MoM) in December 2022, the online retail sales of physical goods surged 6.2 per cent YoY, the NBS said.
